Gap Year are an Australian outfit that specialises in a nostalgic yet refreshing brand of alternative indie pop. Releasing their highly acclaimed debut record Flat Out in 2021, the group have been hard at work on their forthcoming album (due in 2025), giving a small taste of the upcoming release with their latest sparkling single, Where I Came From.
Comprised of familiar faces in the Boorloo/ Perth music scene: Daniel Harrison (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Synth), Lee Napper (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Synth), Maddy Blue (Bass, Backing Vocals), Ben Santostefano (Drums), and Rhien Tan (Synth), Gap Year have graced stages such as RTRFM’s ‘In The Pines’, West Australian Music’s WAMFest showcase, and Way Way West, capturing live audiences with their infectious rhythms, thoughtful harmonic structures, and uplifting energy.
With a driving beat and bass line, grounding guitars, and uplifting synth accents, it is easy to get lost in the vivid landscape that Where I Came From creates. With lyrics written by co-songwriter and co-lead vocalist Lee, he shares that “I always find it hard to talk about lyrics because I believe music has different meanings depending on the experiences of the listener. However, for me personally, this song is about being stuck in a rut and being in a relationship that’s hit a wall. I think I try and suppress these feelings by justifying a lack of motivation as some sort of unavoidable product of the past.”
Recorded with Rhien Tan (Segue, Shy Panther, Teen Angst) at Cue Studios and mastered by Dan O’Connor (Mia June, Heathcote Blue, Jocelyn’s Baby, Nika Mo, Sugar Wife, and Web Rumors) at Encoder Sound, fans can expect a few more releases from Gap Year in the new year as the build to the release of their LP.
In the meantime, the band will be celebrating the release of Where I Came From with a single launch on 1 November at The Bird, Northbridge (WA).
